Advice from Medium Writers: Insights from around the platform
I contacted as many people as I could on Medium to get advice in writing. Lets see what advice they gave.
First off, I want to start by saying that I’m very thankful for the people that responded and gave advice, I sent a whole bunch of emails and I only got three responces I can use. Anyway that has their own advice please email me at vivaan.shahani@gmail.com with advice or just comment on this article and I’ll add it in.
I sent around 20 people variations of this email, with names of the person.
Hi,
My name is Vivaan Shahani, and I’m a 14-year-old writer on Medium. I’m reaching out to gather 1–4 sentence pieces of advice from fellow Medium writers. I plan to compile these tips into an article featuring advice from writers around the world.
If you could share some advice, along with a link you’d like to promote and a 10-word bio, I would greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Vivaan Shahani

Here are the responses,
The first one I received was from Jano le Roux.
Jano Le Roux is a “award-winning consultant crafting authentic marketing for high-growth brands”.
The advice he gave me was:
“Great writing is built on tiny words, tiny sentences, and tiny paragraphs — each one sharp enough to leave a mark. In the smallest sentences, you find the biggest truths. 70% of your time should be spent on crafting your title — not your article.”
This is a very in-depth quote he gave me, and it took me a couple minutes to actually understand what he was saying. I believe it's about how being clear, concise and sharp are all you need to leave a big mark. It also is how you should be about finding the truth, and not just clickbait or catchy titles. True writing that will work well is writing that is made by humans for humans with the goal of truth behind it.
I hope to use this when I’m writing by focusing on the titles, keeping the truth in mind, and being clear, concise and sharp. I also want to say thank you to Jano Le Roux for this amazing advice as well as writing an article about my email to you. That was a complete shock to me and I wouldn’t have expected it. For those of you that want to see it I’ve attached it right below this paragraph.
The next person I received advice from is Uzman Ali. As far as I could find, he writes “stuff about startups, education, AI, and my entrepreneurial journey.” His medium bio says that he’s:” On a mission to help 10,000 people grow and create income online in 2024"
The advice given was:
“My only advice for you as new on Medium is to write stuff that provides:
- value
- quality to your readers
The coming days on Medium will be tough so pick a niche and focus on producing work that gives value to your reader. You will be amazed at where you will be in 6 months.”
The point of a article is not to write an article for the sake of writing. The point is to give something where people can learn and take something from. I used to and still do sometimes write things where I would repeat news or just give something but not give a lesson. That’s something I’m going to change now.
Uzman Ali wrote an amazing article about mastering the art of tiny gains. I loved it and it reminded me of an amazing book called Atomic Habits by James Clear.
The final person who has reached out so far was Davlin Knight
He is “a 23 year old introvert who enjoys writing!” He’s also clearly an expert in harnessing AI for social media.
The advice he gave was
My advice for writers on Medium would be to experience everything life has to offer so you never run out of ideas to write about. One issue I struggled with on Medium at first was a lack of topics to write about, basically writer’s block. I would force myself to research and brainstorm ideas, but as a writer, this should come naturally. To combat this, I started experiencing and testing new hobbies, and from these new hobbies came ideas and topics to write about. So as a writer on Medium or a writer in general, don’t be afraid to test new waters and experience new things.
This advice is to be free and write what you want. Write what comes natural. Write about new things. I completely agree with this and you’ll notice that I have articles about current events and articles of something like this, advice of medium writers. While I know being in a niche will help with views and stats, I also need to remeber to stay free, don’t limit my self and reduce my ablity to write.
Conclusion
I really hope you guys enjoyed this article as much as I did, again I’m always looking for more advice so anything emailed to me or commented will go into this article. I hope that you guys were able to take away as much as me and are going to think differently when writing your articles now.
